Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) provides safe and effective treatment for depression. It is a technique that uses powerful, focused magnetic field pulses to stimulate the neurons of the brain. TMS stimulates areas of the brain that are underactive because of depression. It is a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses electromagnetic energy.
First used in Europe in 1985, the FDA approved TMS for the treatment of medication-resistant depression in 2008. Over 1000 TMS centers are in operation globally. TMS is the only FDA approved non-invasive treatment for depression. Clinicians report 60-80% patient positive response and/ or full remission of depressive symptoms. In contrast, patients who have not responded to two or three medications, only have a 15% chance that the next medication will work. In fact, TMS has proven very effective for the treatment of resistant depression and is often used to treat other mental disorders.
